What Thompson Capper Ltd have to say...
Thompson & Capper was formed by Thomas Thompson in 1798; S. J. Capper joined as a partner in 1843. Originally a homeopathic chemist in Liverpool, the company grew to include a manufacturing facility as well as several retail outlets in the UK.
In the early 1900s, the company became associated with Stokes Machine Co. of Philadelphia and started to produce tablet presses under the name of Manesty at the Liverpool factory. This venture was later sold and operates today as BWI Manesty producing modern tablet presses.
In 1976, Thompson & Capper relocated to a dedicated facility in Runcorn, Cheshire and then concentrated on the manufacture of tablets. Since then, we have evolved into a major manufacturer of quality tablets and capsules to some of the best known companies and brands around the world.
In 1988, we obtained ISO9002 certification and, in 1998, the Medicines Control Agency granted us a full manufacturing licence following a major expansion and the move into a purpose built factory for the manufacture of vitamins, minerals and supplements.
In 1999, DCC plc, acquired Thompson & Capper Ltd., thus providing us with the financial support and focus to continue to grow our business in the new millennium. A €7m extension followed in 2008 giving us the complete manufacturing flexibility to meet all our customer needs and, when DCC acquired Netherlands tablet contract manufacturer, Numard, in 2010, we were able to bring their manufacturing on site.
Our sister companies, EuroCaps and Laleham Healthcare are also owned by DCC; this means that DCC Health & Beauty Solutions Group can now offer tablets, hardshell and softgel capsules, creams, liquids and packaging services for our growing customer base.
Thompson & Capper can rightly claim to have been involved in the history of tablet making. Over the years, medicines, food stuffs and chemicals have formed the bulk of our work but our processes have also included such novelties as tea tablets and tablets used to inflate tennis balls!
